The basis for the division of Earths atmosphere is the

temperature profile of each layer.

Troposphere - temperature decreases from lower troposphere to upper troposphere. By the time it reaches the minimum temperature, as you go higher the temperature starts to increase and this is now the layer of stratosphere.

Stratosphere - temperature increases as you higher in this layer.

Mesosphere - temperature decreases as you go higher in this layer.

Thermosphere - temperature increase as you go higher.
